Accessible Hustings Event

Event

Our Accessible Hustings event took place on Tuesday 16th April at the Purple Playhouse Theatre.

We’d like to thank Brighton & Hove Conservatives, Brighton & Hove Liberal Democrats, Brighton & Hove Green Party and Brighton & Hove Labour Group for attending our Accessible Hustings event today.

People with a learning disabilities are often locked out of the democratic process because of how it works, the language that is used and the speed at which things happen.

Our Hustings event allowed candidates and voters to engage face to face, in a 1 to 1 situation and talk to each other.

People asked questions about homelessness, education and adult social care. We believe that everyone went away with more understanding – including the candidates.

We’d also like to thanks Grace Eyre and St. John’s School and College for planning this with us, the Purple Playhouse Theatre for hosting the event and especially Ben for his wonderful MC ‘ing.

If you have a learning disability and would like to get more involved in having your say about certain issues, please get in touch with Dawn: [email protected] or give us a ring on:01273 421921

Fantastic words from Steve Davis who is a candidate for Green Party – Withdean “The Speak Out hustings was absolutely incredible. With less than 10% of people with learning difficulties and disabilities voting it is vital that this vulnerable part of our society become more engaged in the process that has so much affect on their daily lives. I was humbled by the passion of the people I met today and would be honoured to represent them ”
