In April, Speak Out and Grace Eyre held an event to help people with learning disabilities prepare for the coming elections this year.

Speak Out hosted another of our open advocacy meetings on Friday 8th March, with 23 people with learning disabilities in attendance.

Launching our 2024/25 Big Focus Campaign. The key issue is Housing and it was chosen by our members who have learning disabilities.

Opened by Councillor Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, the evening saw talks from our members and trustees discussing the impact that Speak Out has made this year, we welcomed new and existing trustees back onto the board, enjoyed delicious food and also had a go at some karaoke.

The film tells the story of how self-advocacy has influenced and changed the lives of many people with a learning disability, helping them to become empowered to speak up for their rights and needs.

On Saturday 16th September, the Coral Reefers, a group of local Brighton and Hove women drawn together by a love of the sea, swam 5K along the Brighton and Hove Shoreline to help raise money for Speak Out.

We are beginning to get our places confirmed for the running events and would like to start getting them booked in, so, please ask your friends, family, neighbours, work colleagues etc. anyone that you know who may be interested in running and fundraising for us!

So far, we have had a meeting about the cost-of-living crisis in March and we had a meeting about mental health in July.

We had a very exciting day during one of our drop-in sessions at the Brighthelm centre recently, where we were visited by Chicken Mark and his family of therapy chickens and ducklings.
