Starting salary: £28,513 - £30,258 (pro rata)  

Hours: 21 hours per week,

Location: Based at Speak Out’s office: Brighthelm Centre, North Road, Brighton BN11YD 

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Advocacy Team Leader to oversee Speak Out’s 1-1 advocacy service.  The post holder will: 

  • Deliver an advocacy case load, including community and statutory advocacy cases (Care Act and RPPR) and advocacy for parents with learning disabilities going through child protection proceedings. 
  • Supervise a small team (currently 3 part-time advocates) providing a range of 1-1 community and statutory advocacy, including Speak Out’s drop-in advocacy service and transitions advocacy project for young people with learning disabilities. 
  • Manage referrals, allocation of cases and oversee monitoring and case management 
  • Work with the contract manager (line manager) liaising with partner organisations to deliver Speak Out’s contractual duties for the service and report against targets. 

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organisational skills, the ability to manage a complex workload, positively lead a small team and oversee service delivery. They will have extensive experience of delivering high quality community and statutory advocacy case work and will be expected to hold the Level 4 Award in Independent Advocacy Practice, with specialist modules suitable for the role. Experience supervising advocates supporting vulnerable clients is essential. There will be opportunities to develop in the role, through ongoing training, support and supervision.

We are seeking to recruit an advocate who will: 

  • Deliver 1-1 advocacy casework on a broad range of issues that enables people with learning disabilities to express their views and wishes, understand their rights and options, communicate with professionals and address issues they face. 
  • Coordinate Speak Out’s Drop-in advocacy service, providing time limited 1-1 advocacy within drop-in sessions. 
  • Develop peer advocacy at drop-in sessions. 

The successful candidate will need excellent communication and organisational skills. They will be able to manage a complex workload and work independently within a framework of supervision. Experience of advocacy or work with vulnerable clients is essential. Experience of working with people with learning disabilities and knowledge of learning disability services is an advantage. A full induction and training will be provided as well as ongoing peer mentoring and support. It would be desirable for the successful candidate to hold the national qualification in independent advocacy, however this can be undertaken once in post.

We are looking for a volunteer for our new self advocacy group based in Burgess Hill. The group will meet every 2nd Thursday of the month, 2:00pm – 5:00pm, at the Cherry Tree Centre on Fairfield Road, Burgess Hill, RH15 8QB.

  • You will be supporting the group alongside a member of staff
  • Initial induction training will cover the Principles of Advocacy, Speak Out’s Code of Practice and how to advocate within this framework
  • Ongoing training opportunities will be available
