Transitions Advocacy Project Worker

We have an exciting new job at Speak Out. The job is for someone who has:

  • experience of what it is like to have a learning disability.
  • a good understanding of the issues that young people with a learning disability face on their journey to becoming an adult.

It is part of Speak Out’s Transitions Project funded by the Henry Smith Charity. The job is for 4 hours a week.

We will pay you £2,529 per year. This is about £211 per month

You will get 24 hours paid holiday each year plus bank holidays (this is equal to 6 weeks a year if you were working full time)

What is Speak Out’s Transitions Project?

The Transitions Project is an advocacy project for young people with learning disabilities aged 17 – 26+ years old. The project supports young people with learning disabilities on their journey towards becoming more independent.

What will you do in the job?

You will work alongside the Transition project Coordinator Sarah Charsley.

The main aim of your work will be to support young people with learning disabilities to understand and speak up about the issues that affect their life.

You will do this helping to run different activities including:

  • Helping to plan and run workshops for young people with learning disabilities about issues that affect them, for example on relationships, housing or independence skills.
  • Finding out about local events and activities that young people can get involved in.
  • Helping to make short films about the experiences of young people with learning disabilities.
  • Telling young people, the public and professionals about the Transitions Project. This might be by using social media (e.g. Facebook), or making easy read information or videos.

Bank Advocate/Advocacy Worker needed!

Would you like to make a difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities?

We are looking for Bank Advocates/Advocacy Workers to join our dedicated team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a difference and who enjoys working with people with learning disabilities. You will:

  • Ensure people’s rights are met
  • Help people make their own decisions
  • Make sure people are at the centre of decision making
  • Support people to be heard and to speak up
  • Support people to make the changes they want and need

You will work across both 1:1 advocacy and self-advocacy services. You may be required to take on advocacy case work where you are the advocate for somebody with a learning disability. Or you may support our self-advocacy group work, supporting or leading a group, event, or drop-in: enabling people with learning disabilities to develop their self-advocacy skills.

Please note this is an ad-hoc role (as and when required) where the times of work may fluctuate depending on funding and where cover is needed against periods of staff sickness and annual leave, sometimes at short notice.

Pay: Between £13.97 – £14.25 per hour, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Volunteer Self Advocacy Group Supporter: Steering Group

We are currently looking for a volunteer to help support our weekly steering group meeting. 

The steering group meets from 2:00 – 3:30pm every Monday and is comprised of 5 adults with learning disabilities.  We meet at the Brighthelm Centre, in central Brighton. 

The aim of the group is to organise and present quarterly open advocacy meetings.  These meetings focus on a different topic each time and are attended by members of the learning disability community in Brighton & Hove. 

The group is also involved in running self-advocacy training for people with learning disabilities in the community. The role involves: 

  • Helping the group leader to facilitate the meetings 
  • Supporting the group to work together on tasks 
  • Supporting individuals with learning disabilities to work on tasks that have been assigned to them 
  • To support group members to achieve their individual goals 
  • To encourage group members to be as independent as possible 
  • Attend induction training and ongoing training as required 
  • To work independently as needed and adhere to the Speak Out Codes of Practice for Volunteers and Advocates at all times  
  • To identify at risk clients and follow Speak Out’s safeguarding process if needed  
  • To challenge discrimination and help people to have their rights upheld.

Drop-in Volunteer: Speak Out Central

We are currently on the hunt from some volunteers to help support our weekly Speak Out Central drop-ins. 

Speak Out Central is a weekly drop-in for people with learning disabilities in the centre of Brighton, helping to prevent loneliness and social isolation. People get together over a cuppa at main office at the Brighthelm Centre between 2pm and 5pm every Tuesday. We aim to support people to be more involved in their local community and make connections with others at the drop-in and the wider community in the city. 

The role involves: 

  • To help facilitate weekly drop-in meetings with other volunteers and staff  
  • Work with people with Learning disabilities to become more independent and try new things away from the drop-in 
  • Support people with learning disabilities to develop supportive relationships and friendships 
  • Support people with learning disabilities to feel more confident accessing mainstream services.  
  • Attend induction training and ongoing training as required. 
  • To work independently as needed and adhere to the Speak Out Codes of Practice for Volunteers and Advocates at all times 
  • Support people in the decisions they make but not make them for them. 
  • To challenge discrimination and help people to have their rights upheld. 
  • To identify at risk clients and follow Speak Out’s safeguarding process if needed
